Triples and PLD Planning


Today we discussed triples observations. The aim of the triples is to work towards our goals. These will look slightly different this time.

We began planning in PLD teams for Literacy, Maths and Sustainability.

Reading, Writing and Maths Targets:

Increase the number of students meeting or exceeding NZ Curriculum expectations for Reading , Writing and Maths

Aspects of Reading and Writing Teachers Identified as going well -


Active demonstrating
Goal setting - kids goal setting - task oriented goals
Integrating reading and writing with Inquiry - authentic connections
Tautoru - wide range of literacy in terms of reading approaches - poems , phonics, not just reading - bits that feed into reading and writing
Shared language - Yolanda language
whole language stuff -
connections to oral language
Te Ao Maori and NZ History has been a great context for reading - fictions and non fiction
relevant
poetry is a way
Year 4 - less keen on writing poetry - Seniors are keen poem writers
Poetry there are less rules - more freedom - creativity
Using models - giving a recipe
Poetry is like a quick write
Spelling talk alouds during shared
Silly sentences for spelling patterns - different ways to write a sound
Reading together daily for pleasure. Getting excited about what books have to offer.

Hunches Reading and Writing -

In the Junior School our children have lots of ideas but lack the skills to record in writing (e.g. motor skills, letter formation, phonics/word family knowledge). (Raife, incredible ideas - outcome does show his creativity.)

Links to oral language - writing floats on a sea of talk.
We know that children who are successful in reading and writing have a solid grasp of phonetic knowledge.
If we alter our approaches to the teaching of phonics, how will this impact students who are not successful with current teaching approaches/practice? (TAI - Yolanda Soryl Programme)
Senior School - hunch questions - Do we plan to explicitly teach spelling patterns - magic e - ight, etc? How does that fit with current Yolanda and other approaches being used? What approaches exist that could be successful in our context?
Hunch - spelling is taught in amongst reading and writing and for some it needs to be explicitly focussed on.

Aspects of Maths going well -

We have begun to use common language/ Number Talks
Using materials to build number sense
Multi level approach
Mixed ability, social grouping
Varied curriculum
Strand/ Number knowledge/ real context

What do our learners need in Maths? 

Talk Moves- cards for students/ student agency- one paper/ group work/ discourse
Number Sense/ Mental Maths
Number Talks planning- Big ideas, common misconceptions, strategies
Growth Mindset, resilience, accepting challenges
Formative Assessment

How????

Sustainability

People are losing social connection and becoming more socially isolated.
Studies show that we lack social resilience and community connections.
In the past the interest in trapping helped to create a community wide action and we would like to build on that.

What is going well- Sustainability -

Some kids are involved in planting.
Kids enjoyed the trapping.
Kids understand the concept of Kaitiakitanga.
Good community connections and outside agencies (Enviroschool) have been made.
Links to Te Ao Māori are clear.
Seniors positive purpose group and envirogroup.

Our learners need to -

Take the lead in sustainability and involve whānau more.
Experience the outdoors as a third teacher through science, technology, third places, etc.
Have ongoing environmental experiences
Experience positive purpose and accomplishment.

Maths Triples Planning


We will be starting our Maths sessions with something that has been been going well in our Maths lessons. We started with this today. 

Our TAIs and Triples with fit in with one or more of the hunches that we developed together in session 1:

  1. Some of our students do not like Maths (girls…) Attitudes to Maths have a huge impact on achievement. (Girls, Societal/parental messaging, stereotypes etc.) Some students lack engagement in Maths (have little connection to the relevance, application, beauty of Maths) parent community don’t understand current approach to maths Teaching/learning.
  2. Developing discourse in Maths will have an impact on student achievement.  Discourse in Maths is less rich than in Literacy. Including unpacking the meaning of Maths vocab and ideas.
  3. Formative assessment practices need to be enhanced in order to capture and track achievement day to day. How can assessment procedures align with teaching and learning. How can stress be removed from assessment?  
  4. Many students lack Number Sense (as a result of abstract nature of Maths teaching,procedural learning in Maths?)
  5. Students in Maths are less likely to be in ‘Flow’, an investigative/Inquiry cycle would bring more meaning?

In our triples teams we shared our planning.

Critical Questions for our Triples Discussion:

How will/might this learning impact on achievement for your Target students?
What are you investigating in Maths? What hunch is this connected to?
How does this plan/lesson connect to your TAI?
What are the innovations you are trialling?
What are the desired outcomes for learners?
How do you think the action you have selected going to impact?
What are the desired effects for your practice?
What are the shifts in your practice you are working towards?
What will this mean for you? How will that make you feel if you achieved these?

Reading for Monday (in reference to triples): Maths: Accountable Talk Ain't just for kids
"How often and how deeply do teachers, coaches, principals or district supervisors explicate their reasoning and hold it out for scrutiny by the professional community? How often do we speak up, ask questions, challenge assumptions and dig deep when it comes to questioning our practice and beliefs? How many of us avoid these behaviours for fear of offending someone or being seen as resistant or difficult? When people around us do question our beliefs or practice, how many of us receive these questions with an open mind and an inquiry stance?"

Writing- Session 5 (Planning for Triples)

Triples planner: The work will be for ongoing sessions.
You will need to complete planner (see doc)
This might link to your TAI but other things may pop up.

Discoveries:
Anna- Triples as a Kaizen step to TAI. (Both can be used as evidence for PPG).
Gillian- Good to have this time to chat, ask questions and clarify how triples, TAI and PPG all fits together. Also good to share context of TAI so others in the group get a clearer picture of the aims.

Action:
Have lesson planner ready before observations next week.

Here is a run down for Maths Triples Next week and the week after.  There are a few group changes etc .  We also really want to 'join the dots' between our PLD Foci/meetings , WBS initiatives such as triples observations, teaching goals etc and student outcomes.  
 FOCUS of Maths Triples -    Improve student outcomes in maths                        
For these triples please think about the sorts of things you might want to demonstrate/explore/discuss during your sessions.


Please keep in mind the things we have looked at already so that the session is relevant:
-Using growth mindset in Maths
-Maths as a creative realm and the application of flexible thinking
-Visualisation in Maths, number talks
-Collaborative problem solving
-Formative assessment, student voice in learning, self evaluation and goal  setting
                         
There is likely to be quite a lot of cross- over with some of these things.  It is bound to be really interesting.  Exciting!
During this session we will also be setting Teaching goals :
These goals will focus on student outcomes.  What difference will ‘numbertalks’ or…………. make to this group/individual .... and where will they be by.........  How will you know ?    What will you see/collect/gather ?  What will they be able to do ?

First 20 minutes:   Share how your Maths programme is structured.  
Before Observation - Person being observed will share:
  • focus for the lesson, background to student needs in maths
  • the planning - lesson sequence overview and student outcomes
  • personal goals in teaching maths - or your Teaching as Inquiry


During Observation:
  • note teaching strategies/behaviours
  • what students are doing in relation to these
  • what is effective?
  • what could be improved?


After Observation discuss:

  • what were the strengths?
  • what could be improved?
  • questions to think about/consider
  • set a teaching goal for the next 4 weeks.  We will reflect on this during an admin meeting.
